Project & Operations Management

Analysis through to delivery, with milestones, reporting and realistic timelines.

The problem

Projects run over budget and past deadline, and nobody can say how far along they are.

Who it's for

Organisations needing a project delivered who do not have a technical manager in-house.

Most project failures are not technical. They are scope that grew without being acknowledged, estimates given without a basis, and a status report that says “on track” until the week it says otherwise.

Management is the discipline of preventing those three things.

What this covers

Analysis. What the project actually needs to achieve, and what it must not disturb. Done properly this reduces the build substantially.

Development. The build itself, in visible increments.

Project management. Sequence, dependencies, milestones, and the decisions that need making along the way.

Reporting. Progress in terms anyone can act on, including bad news early.

How we manage

  • Milestones, not percentages. “90% done” is not verifiable. “The login flow works and is tested” is.
  • Scope changes are written down. Not refused — recorded, with their effect on time stated. Silent scope growth is the single most common cause of overrun.
  • Risks are named early. A risk raised in week two is a conversation. The same risk in week ten is a crisis.
  • Demonstrations regularly. Working software beats a status document every time.

What you get

  • A project plan with real dates and stated assumptions
  • A short written update at an agreed cadence
  • Visible progress — something you can look at, not just be told about
  • A clear definition of done, agreed upfront
  • Handover documentation

On honesty

If a deadline will slip, we say so as soon as we know, with the revised date and the reason. Discovering a slip at the deadline is far more damaging than hearing about it early, so the incentive is to raise it early rather than protect the plan.

  • →IT and business analysis
  • →Project development
